According to Rotten Tomatoes, the general view is that Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth is fantastic. On the review aggregation site, Denzel Washington’s latest portrayal in a Shakespearian adaption has a perfect score, with critics praising Washington’s main protagonist and Francis McDormand’s scheming Lady Macbeth.
Critics love Denzel
Denzel Washington stars in the film, which takes a minimalist approach to the famous tale, retaining most of the stanzas pentameter-laden speech while limiting the aesthetics to simple, contemporary black and white cinematography in a high 1.37:1 viewing angle.
Corey Hawkins plays Macduff, Brendan Gleeson plays King Duncan, and Kathryn Hunter plays the witches in the film.
Experts have praised Coen’s adaptation as developing fresh life to the half-millennium-old story, praising its imagination photography and McDormand’s portrayal as Lady Macbeth as one of her biggest successes, a tough task for a three-time Academy Award winner.
Denzel Washington, who has won two Academy Awards, aren’t far behind McDormand in terms of accomplishments. And commentators are praising Denzel Washington’s sophisticated portrayal of the tragic figure, noting that the two actors’ interaction spans the spectrum of dramatic sentiments you’d want from a Shakespeare production.
Prepare for screenings
Denzel has previously appeared in a movie version of Shakespeare’s works, having already played Don Pedro in Kenneth Branagh’s 1993 adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing. Despite the fact that Branagh co-directed and starred in a theatrical adaptation of Macbeth that was transmitted to cinemas in 2013, critics have mostly dismissed that version in favor of this new one.
The latest reviews follow the film’s screening on September 24 at the 2021 New York Film Festival, and it marks Joel’s first debut film minus his brother Ethan Coen. A24 will broadcast The Tragedy of Macbeth in selected theaters on December 25, 2021, and it will subsequently be available for streaming on Apple TV+ on January 14, 2022.
