Legendary group Whodini suffers the loss of member Ecstasy
John “Ecstasy” Fletcher of hip-hop trio Whodini has passed away at the age of 56. The news of Fletcher’s death came from The Roots’ member and drummer Questlove via Instagram.
“One Love to Ecstasy of the Legendary #Whodini. This man was legendary and a pivotal member of one of the most legendary groups in hip hop. This is sad man.”
Fletcher formed Whodini with Jalil Hutchins in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1982. DJ Grandmaster Dee later joined the group in 1986. Whodini was best known for their hits, “One Love” and “Freaks Come Out at Night”. Known for his trademark hat, Ecstasy helped Whodini become one of rap’s first sex symbols.
Managed by Russell Simmons in the 80s, the rap trio released several albums, including Escape in 1984, which was certified platinum. The two albums that followed, Back in Black and Open Sesame, were gold-certified by the RIAA.
In 2018, Whodini received the Hip Hop Icon Award at the 3rd Annual Black Music Honors. They were honored by fellow icons Doug E Fresh, Yo-Yo, and Monie Love.
After receiving the news of Ecstasy’s death, fellow artists and fans took to social media to share their hurt and condolences.
