Hip-Hop’s Hardest Workers Acknowledged
The Rap Grammy nominations have been announced and the nominees this year have stirred a buzz about the industry as always. While the artists who were nominated are all deserving of the honor due to their dedication to their craft, there are several others who feel snubbed from the opportunity.
The Grammy-nominated Rap artists for the 2021 Grammys include Dirty South artists like GQ Artist of the Year Meg Thee Stallion, DaBaby, Travis Scott, and Lil Baby. Other notable nominations include Royce Da 5’9, Freddie Gibbs, Jack Harlow, and the late Pop Smoke all of our first-time nominees for the Grammys.

There are always mixed opinions for Hip-Hop/Rap as a genre in Grammy nominations. The genre has only been recognized by the Grammy committee since 1989 and has been accused of misrepresenting the culture on several occasions.
At last year’s ceremony, Young Money Megastar Drake claimed that getting a Grammy is not true validation for the work that Hip-Hop artists put in. He stated that the artists are winners because of the support that their fans give them on their journey. His speech was cut short due to him bashing the Grammys on live TV.
Grammy Dubs and Snubs
While many artists were given nods by the Grammy committee, there were several others who were missing from the list despite having remarkable success in music since last year’s award show.
With limited spots available for the nominees, there are surprise snubs that validate the idea that the Grammy committee is flawed in their assessment of what’s actually hot in the culture of Black music in general.
Artists like The Weeknd and Lil Uzi Vert were completely omitted from their respective categories despite having chart-topping albums (Uzi’s album Eternal Atake) with great commercial success. When fans of the culture see these oversights, they lead to the distrusting nature that has formed between the Grammys and the Hip-Hop world.
Even with the blunders of the Grammys, the Hip-Hop community still supports all who are nominated and look to see who brings home the awards. Congratulations to all nominees!
