Hip-Hop Pioneer Markie Dee Gone Too Soon
Earlier today (February 18) Mark Anthony Morales aka Prince Markie Dee passed away at the age of 52 one day before his 53rd birthday. The cause of death has not yet been determined.
Prince Markie Dee is most famously known as a member of the iconic Hip-Hop trio, The Fat Boys along with the late Darren “Buff Love” Robison and Damon “Kool Rock-Ski” Wimbley who is the only living member at this point.
As a rapper in the ’80s going into the ’90s, Prince Markie Dee and the Fat Boys were apart of the New Jack Swing sound that helped Hip-Hop transition into the space of being the most popular genre of music.
With the Fat Boys, Markie Dee was able to create several successful projects including the platinum-selling Crushin’.
Even after the break up of the Fat Boys in the ’90s, Markie Dee was able to have a reputable solo career as well with his album “Free” and the popular jam “Typical Reasons”
Markie Dee was also a well-known and sought-after producer with impressive credits including Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Drake, Ariana Grande, and Destiny’s Child.
In the 2000s Markie Dee began a career in radio as DJ and continued with that career until his untimely passing. His tenure includes stints with Miami’s 103.5 The Beat in addition to the Rock The Bells channel on Sirius XM Satellite Radio.

His image and likeness were recognized beyond music thanks to appearances in the films “Krush Groove” and “The Disorderlies”.
The Hip-Hop community mourns the passing of Prince Markie Dee because of the influence he possessed as a pioneer in the game.
When his style of music that included beatboxing was introduced along with the Fat Boys, that success leads to acts like Biz Markie and Dougie Fresh having relevance as well.
