OutKast’s Classic Project Celebrates 20 Years
Last week OutKast celebrated the 20th anniversary of the release of their fourth studio album Stankonia. The dynamic duo of Andre 3000 and Big Boi have been making music for over two decades and Stankonia was an album that solidified their status as top tier artists in Hip-Hop.
With tracks like the timeless Ms.Jackson and Bombs Over Baghdad, the sounds from the album helped to define the essence of what was prominent during the early 2000s and beyond.
For most fans of OutKast, Stankonia marked a stylistic transition for Andre 3000 in which he switched from his just using his rapping voice to incorporating unique melodies that come from his distinct vocals.
Even though Outkast’s previous project Aquemini had some flashes of 3 Stacks utilizing this blended styling, Stankonia showed definitive progression and improvement in delivering that style.
In tandem with Big Boi who had a clever and bombastic style of lyricism, OutKast began the new millennium poised to be some of the most influential artists of their time after dropping Stankonia.
Stankonia Proves The South Has Something to Say
From the time that the album first hit stores, Stankonia had an immediate impact that very few albums of any genre have had in modern music.
The album sold 530k copies in the first week out and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart continuing OutKast’s trend of industry excellence that had started with their first three albums.
The success of Stankonia can also be viewed as the project that propelled them into international success since the next major project that followed it was The Speakerboxxx/Love Below which is the best selling Hip-Hop album of all time.
For the South as an institution of Hip-Hop, Stankonia helped to cement their place within a Hip-Hop culture that was not always so receptive to their style and flavor.
What’s even more impressive is that both Big Boi and Andre 3000 used the success from Stankonia and their other albums to establish successful solo careers that ran long after their days as a duo.
Due to their consistency and dedication to innovate their style, OutKast is revered as one of the best Hip-Hop groups of all time as well as Dirty South Pioneers.
The Stankonia 20th Anniversary is a wonderful reminder of what styles and sounds influence our popular music today. Although Andre 3000 made the statement at the 1995 Source Awards, time and again he along with Big Boi proved that ”THE SOUTH STILL HAS SOMETHING TO SAY!!”.
