Reoccurring Name Backlash
Mulatto has been feeling the heat lately with all the backlash and criticism she has been getting for a while about her alias. She has received so much criticism the rapper is even taking changing her name into consideration.
Gaining fame quickly comes with people having something to say and controversy throughout your career. With that being said, many have found the star’s name incredibly offensive especially to the black community because of the negative connotations and history behind the word “Mulatto” meaning someone of mixed race.
She listened to the criticism and took time to consider a name change. Years back when Mulatto was still rising to her fame at 15, she said she wanted to make something positive out of the negative. She was never ashamed of what she was and she wanted that to be shown through her stage name but is now reconsidering.
“I can’t say too much because we’re working on something right now, but I would be lying to say it hasn’t crossed my mind before,” she hints to the outlet. “It is a controversy that I hear and see every day as far as my name goes, so I would be lying to say no I never thought of that. But I can’t say too much because right now, it’s going to be a part of something bigger,” the star continued.
Mulatto had an interview with Revolt a few months back and she talked about the inspiration behind her music. She talked about how she looked up to certain rappers when she was younger such as the icon Nicki Minaj.
“When I was growing up and Nicki Minaj came out, that was a huge impact because she’s the only female rapper mainstream-wise. I’m only 10 years old, I didn’t know about any underground whatever. I knew Nicki. This generation, these 10-year-olds got a million girls to choose from. A couple mainstream who have accomplishments. Our underground female rappers, we’re still big,” Mulatto says to Revolt.
