When the Denver Broncos are up for sale in 2022, JAY-Z has been mentioned as a possible buyer. Multiple claims claiming otherwise have been debunked by a source close to the case, according to Complex. They claim that even if the opportunity arises next year, the Roc Nation billionaire “isn’t looking to purchase” the team.
Pat Bowlen bought the franchise for $78 million in 1984, but his seven daughters have struggled with ownership since his death in 2019.
Jay Z vs Bezos
JAY-Z and Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos was reportedly in the race, according to Front Office Sports. According to insiders, JAY-name Z’s came up regularly when the Broncos’ potential sale, which might garner upwards of $4 billion, was discussed. But Jay, who is worth $1.4 billion according to Forbes, would have needed to find investors to make it possible.
Meanwhile, Bezos was said to be in talks for a 40% ownership in the Washington Redskins, but nothing came of it. He’s reportedly still interested in buying an NFL team, and with his $200 billion fortune, it’s not out of the question.
Team isn’t for sale yet
Joe Ellis, the president and CEO of the Denver Broncos, was categorical in July that the team was not for sale, not yet.
“There are a few options out there as to what we can do,” he said. “You’re probably aware of those. We’re going to get through this season. Our goal is to focus on that, have a good year and hopefully be competitive and be around for the postseason tournament once that begins. That’s where our focus is.
“Until the season’s over, you’re not going to hear a whole lot about the future of ownership of the team.”
In 2019, JAY-Z and Roc Nation joined forces with the NFL as a “live music entertainment strategist.” If JAY-Z decides to purchase the Denver Broncos, he will become the first African-American owner of an NFL team.
