Successful and prominent ‘business man” and music icon Jay-Z is celebrating his 51st birthday.

Shawn “Corey” Carter better known to the public as Jay-Z is a very influential pioneer in business and in music. And today, Jay gets to look back on 51 years of life.

Born and raised in New York City, growing up in Marcy Projects, Jay was no stranger to drugs. Rap became HOV’s escape while coming up in a tough neighborhood. The Brooklyn rapper stepped onto the music scene in the late 1980s appearing on MTV Raps in 1989. In circa 1994 Jigga founded Roc-A-Fella with Damon “Dame” Dash and Kareem Burke. Jay would later found Roc Nation in 2008.

Subsequently, HOV dropped “Reasonable Doubt” and though the record only reached No. 23 on Billboard charts, the album is considered a classic hip-hop album to this day. “Reasonable Doubt” also featured big name artists like Mary J. Blige and Notorious B.I.G. After his debut album, Jay would later continue to push out classic albums like “Magna Carta…Holy Grail” and “4:44”.

Following the release of “Reasonable Doubt”, Jay-Z released Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life. The song “Hard Knock Life” featured on this album scored Jay first Grammy nomination. As Jay picked up momentum, there was no turning back.Carter would go on to bring hip-hop and rap fans more hits like “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)”, “Big Pimpin”, and “Can I Get A”.

One of Jay’s most critically acclaimed albums is his sixth studio album “The Blueprint”. Kanye West and Just Blaze were two big producers on the project. This album received multiple awards show nominations for “best rap album of the year’ for Billboard, The Grammy’s, and The Soul Train Music Awards.

Diddy took time out to wish Jay-Z a happy birthday on Instagram.

“The Black Album” once slated as Jay’s last album.

In 2003, Jay-Z gave fans “The Black Album” but announced it would be the his last album. Rap and hip-hop fans were not interested in hearing one of their favorite artists retiring from music. Carter explained, the rap game wasn’t hot enough and anticipated a more competitive market creatively.

During a hiatus from rapping, Jay-Z acknowledged another side of him that embodies who he is as a WHOLE. Amid the break, HOV tapped into business, becoming Def Jam’s president, opening two 40/40 Club locations, and becoming part owner of the New Jersey Nets franchise.

Jay posts to Instagram wishing himself a happy birthday.

Shawn Carter expanded further than solely music.

While climbing to the top, HOV made it a point to share the knowledge he’s acquired over the years in his songs. Jay has incorporated advice about credit to family heirlooms in his songs.

Jay has shown that he has more sides of him than just rap. The “Hard Knock Life” rapper wed music icon Beyonce in 2008 and the couple share three kids together. The Carters co-headlined the “On the Run” tour in 2014 which concluded in Paris, France.

Shawn Carter is forever a great in the rap game and has laced his catalog with notable hits. Salute HOV and Happy Birthday H to tha O-V!
