Global Goal Concert: Addressing the COVID-19 Pandemic and Systemic Racism and Oppression

On June 27th at 7 pm Global Citizen launched a live concert on YouTube to “Unite for Our Future”. The concert consisted of multiple musical performances and appearances from both celebrities and international officials. The main goal of this live stream was to raise awareness of the severity of the global pandemic known as COVID-19 but also draw attention to the Race war for anti-racism and anti-oppressive systems all over the world.

Jennifer Hudson opens the concert with a powerful rendition of “Where Peaceful Water’s Flow” but before she consoles the audience with her amazing voice she makes a simple statement; “The power of unity creates change. So let’s keep coming together to create that change. Good change.”

Followed by a message from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who acknowledges the ones lost to the COVID-19 virus. Dwayne is the host for this live stream concert and highlights the fight amongst the pandemic given the protests which have spread globally following the tragic murder of George Floyd and countless other African Americans at the hands of police officers. Dwayne is adamant about positive solutions toward a brighter future and states that: “Access to health is a fundamental right. That we cannot and will not allow to be dictated by income or race. Equality is a fundamental right that we cannot allow to be dictated by income or race. The future depends on what we do today and today we unite for our future.”

Featuring multiple celebrities like Billy Porter who remembered activists Malcolm X, Martin Luthar King Jr., and Martha P.  Johnson in the name of LGBTQIA rights amongst the fight for anti-racism. Kerry Washington who has been on the front lines fighting against systemic racism while promoting peace. Chris Rock and Forest Whitaker also make appearances to address systemic racism. Followed by a performance by Chloe and Halle Bailey of their song “ROYL” featured on their new album Ungodly Hour. Check out their performance above.
