Hip-hop icon DMX turns 50 Years old today. On December 18, 1970, Earl Simmons who is better known as DMX was born in Mount Vernon, New York, and began his rap career in 1991 selling mixtapes.
In 1998 after signing with Def Jam, DMX had one of the greatest mainstream debuts in Hip-Hop history. Both his albums It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot and Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 going multi-platinum in both drops as well.
With songs like “Get at Me Dog” and “Ruff Ryders Anthem” leading the way, DMX became one of the most loved figures in Hip-Hop back in the late ’90s. The reputation formed in the 90’s made way for him to become nominated for many awards like the Grammys and American Music Awards.
DMX’s personality and charisma allowed him to become a very popular actor in his career as well. He has had roles in cult classics like Belly and Romeo Must Die. Other on-screen exploits include special appearances on TV shows like Chappelle’s Show, Moesha, and Eve.
Although he has had great success in his life, DMX has also had a great deal of hardship and legal trouble that has haunted him through his career.
From the begging of his career in 1998 until as recently as 2019, DMX has been incarcerated multiple times robbing him of some of his best years as an artist. He also had many drug addictions that caused turmoil in his personal life and career as well.
Through all of his mistakes, DMX is now a sober man who is free from prison and living as a modern-day Hip-Hop legend. This year we were reminded of how awesome DMX has been for the culture during the Versuz with Snoop Dogg.
In present times he is a deacon working to become a pastor and become closer to God. We wish DMX a very happy birthday today!
