Combs Takes Action Against Former Clothing Line
Sean Combs who is better known as Diddy is in the midst of a legal dispute with Sean John the clothing company that he founded.
Diddy issuing current brand owners GBG (Global Brands Group) $25 million for using his image and likeness without his permission.
Diddy originally started Sean John as a brand in 1998. He was able to push Sean John’s notoriety to a respectable space in mainstream culture and became one of the trailblazers in Hip-Hop for having his clothing line at a time where it was less common.
Diddy would later go on to sell a major stake of Sean John to GBG in 2016 giving them ownership over the company.
In this current dispute, Diddy’s lawsuit states that GBG used his pictures and likeness in a new partnership with women’s retailer Missguided based out of the U.K.
The lawsuit also states that GBG placed false claims out about Diddy’s endorsement of Missguided.
Part of his lawsuit read:
“The SJ/Missguided Agreement was entered into without Mr. Combs’s knowledge, approval, or consent, and Mr. Combs has never endorsed the GBG Collection, which is branded ‘wean john x missguided’ and ‘Sean John x Missguided.’”
“Mr. Combs has neither granted Defendants the right to use his name, image, likeness, or persona in conjunction with the GBG Collection, nor has he agreed to make a public statement or appearance in support of the GBG Collection.”
Last year as the 2020 Presidential Election was going on, Diddy had accused GBG of using his “Vote or Die” phrase in an indirect fashion further fueling the push of this current lawsuit.
Diddy’s legal team is seeking a jury trial in addition to the $25 million however GBG USA has not released a statement in response to the allegations at this time.
